Chairman, Governing Council, Ajayi Crowther University (ACU), Oyo, Chief Wole Olanipekun (SAN) has stressed the need for the country to digitize E-learning in the face of the coronavirus pandemic for education not to take the back seat.

The senior advocate said it is necessary for the government and the people to always prepare for the rainy day in terms of education.

Olanipekun spoke at the unveiling of Prof. Timothy Adedayo as the fourth Vice-Chancellor of the university and inauguration of some projects at the permanent site of the Anglican-owned institution in Oyo town.

He said: “The major lesson from COVID-19 in terms of education is that we must key into e-learning. For ACU, though our students are not physically on campus, we never stopped teaching for one day. We were teaching them virtually. All our teachers were here and examinations have been conducted and concluded. Their papers have been marked, results are out and their certificates have been signed by the Vice-Chancellor.

“The only inhibition we have now is from the government’s hang-off. Is the government ready to have them go for national youth service? No, because public universities have not been teaching or able to conduct any examination. There is no relationship between teachers and students. Whereas, for us, representing private universities in this country and representing ourselves, we never stopped a day from teaching our students,” Olanipekun stated.

While introducing the new VC, Chief Olanipekun said the Council has approved the appointment of Prof. Timothy Abiodun Adebayo, a former Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomosho to take up the baton of leadership.

He said: “Five years ago, we appointed Prof. Dapo Asaju as vice-chancellor. At the time, we were still learning how to take one step at a time. The Council gave him the mandate to improve the lot of this university, take it to the next level, expand the scope, broaden the horizon and give the school a better name than we had before.

“Five years into his tenure, Prof Asaju has fared well. Everybody now knows about Ajayi Crowther University; we are at our permanent site; we are in the new Council chamber. With little resources, he has been a very efficient administrator.”

The outgoing VC canvassed a review of the curriculum to raise people who can think properly.

“The colonial model of education must go. Let us have African mentality, thinking, principles, training and morality and see how we can make progress.” Prof Asaju said.
